Bron: Royal Society for the Protection of Animals ( RSPCA )

RSPCA NSW is very pleased to announce that Greyhound racing will be banned in the state of New South Wales effective 1 July 2017. We have addressed some of the questions you may have about the shutting down of this industry.

The list of concerns regarding the Greyhound racing industry is extensive. RSPCA NSW has voiced our concerns to the various governments over many years. On 7 July 2016, we got the result we were desperately hoping for: The New South Wales Government declared that the practice of Greyhound racing in NSW would stop. The industry has been given 12 months to wind down, and will be banned as of 1 July 2017. It is an incredible result for the thousands of Greyhounds born into this inherently cruel industry.

Below, RSPCA NSW has addressed some of your questions surrounding this issue and this historic result for the Greyhounds of New South Wales. Please note that this list of questions will continue to be updated as more enquiries come in from our supporters. If your question hasn’t been addressed here, RSPCA NSW recommends checking back at a later date.

breeding. Surgical artificial insemination is highly invasive, involves surgery and general anaesthesia, and causes significant pain to the female dog. It is banned by some EU countries as it is considered ethically unacceptable.
  • oversupply. The report of the Special Commission of Inquiry into the Greyhound Racing Industry in NSW found that between 48,000 and 68,000 Greyhounds – or at least half of all Greyhounds bred to race – have been killed in the last 12 years because they were deemed uncompetitive and therefore would not bring in financial gain.
  • injury. These include serious bone fractures and muscle injuries. Serious injuries can lead to death on the track or euthanasia.
  • physical overexertion. This leads to collapsing post-race, heat stress-related injury and seizures due to a lack of oxygen.
  • inadequate housing. Many Greyhounds are kept in small, barren, single-dog kennels for prolonged periods of time.
  • a lack of socialisation and environmental enrichment. Many racing Greyhounds are never properly socialised, either with other dogs or with humans. This makes them likely to develop fearfulness and has a negative and significant impact on their welfare.
  • illegal live baiting. Animals such as piglets, possums and rabbits are used as live lures, and suffer incredible distress, fear and injury. These animals can eventually die a long and painful death.
  • the administration of banned or unregistered substances, including anabolic steroids, caffeine, cocaine, erythropoietin (EPO), methamphetamines and Viagra. Using these can have severe physical and psychological effects on the Greyhounds.
